WebJul 29, 2024 · It’s been 52 years since the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic launched in an old Victorian building on the corner of Haight and Clayton streets. The year was 1967, and a massive influx of young people had descended on the neighborhood — many of them sleeping on friends’ sofas, floors, or the street. WebFounded by Dr. David E. Smith, the Haight Ashbury Medical Clinics opened its doors at 558 Clayton Street in July 1967. The clinic provided free medical care for the thousands of young people coming to San Francisco during the “Summer of Love” — many destitute, homeless, in need of medical attention, and/or drug-dependent.
